Community Care Program

The Community Care program attempts to respond to the 24,000 people in the Capital Region who live below the poverty line - 9,000 of these are children.

Unfortunately many people living in our Capital Region are oblivious to the extent of those 'doing it tough' right here in our community. We at Capital Healing Rooms are reaching out to those who are in desperate need or lonely through the following avenues:

  • Food parcels
  • Wanniassa Community Kitchen
  • Traditional Christmas lunch

Food parcels

A key component of the Community Care program is the distribution of food parcels from our Fyshwick office. These care packages provide tangible assistance by way of hampers filled to overflowing with the necessary items needed for everyday living. Non-perishable food goods are included in each hamper, allowing our recipients to prepare a quick and healthy meal for the family. We find those who come in for assistance, usually only need help for a short period of time.

A percentage of the food is donated through local churches. The majority, however, is from donations that come to the Healing Rooms. Since opening our doors in 2004, we have assisted over 500 families with food hampers, a number that is rapidly growing every week.

Wanniassa Community Kitchen

Every Wednesday evening we serve a 2-course meal to those who are lonely or in need in our community. We serve around 70 people each week and approximately 3000 meals per year at the Community Kitchen. We have new people coming most weeks, especially during winter.

The Community Kitchen has four teams of 12 volunteers who give up their time and come and serve those in need of a hot meal and personal fellowship.

(This project is hosted by Capital Healing Rooms and Lifestream Christian Fellowship).

Traditional Christmas Lunch

On Christmas Day CHR, together with Lifestream Christian Fellowship, serve a 3 course, full traditional lunch with all the trimmings. We welcome approximately 150 people and have an army of volunteers from the local area. These volunteers give up their own Christmas Day to share a little bit of Christmas cheer with those who might otherwise be alone. Each person who joins us on Christmas Day receives a gift and leaves feeling well fed and satisfied.
