We believe that Marriage, between a husband and a wife, SHOULD be and CAN be the most mutually rewarding and satisfying relationship here on planet earth. Marriage is ordained by God and is a gift to us from Him.
We have been married 29 years this year (2010) and we can truthfully say that our relationship just gets better and better every year. We are more in love with each other now than we were 29 years ago; we enjoy each other's company; are best friends and appreciate the uniqueness of each other every day. Does that mean our married life has been easy or we've just been 'lucky'? Absolutely NOT!! During our marriage we have had to deal with financial crises, unemployment, long and demanding work hours, suicide of a family member, a family court case, difficult births, raising/training/schooling 4 children, 3 weddings (so far), disagreements, offence, forgiveness and unforgiveness, etc - the list is endless. Does any of this sound familiar? Every day 'stuff' comes along and as husband and wife we need to resolve. We need to work on the issues that come our way and arrive at a 'win-win' solution for both of us, thus finding a way through each challenging period in our lives.
When we were first married, we made a decision that we would honour, love and respect each other and live our lives preferring one another. We decided we didn't get married to be miserable, that we would address the issues when they arose and not bury them only to have them rise to the surface at a later date, exploding like Mount Vesuvius and leaving a trail of destruction everywhere (can anyone out there relate!!!).
There were some 'rules of engagement' that we put in place to allow our marriage to be safe, for example not letting the sun go down on our anger; not discussing delicate issues as we turn the light out for the night; allowing the other person to share their emotions and feelings without being made fun of; not belittling the other person in private or in front of other people; not treating each other like a child; seeking and giving forgiveness when necessary. Do we get it right all the time???? NOOOOOO! Have we 'arrived' yet in our relationship??? Absolutely NOT!!!! Like you, we are on a journey, which sometimes has smooth roads, sometimes has potholes & mountains to climb, sharp bends to negotiate, hills to cruise down, flat tires to mend and sometimes we even run out of 'oil' and 'petrol'.
